Often seen as a 'classic' pattern, Houndstooth can be traced back to around 100 BC and was found on the Gerum Cloak, a garment uncovered in a Swedish peat bog. Contemporary houndstooth checks may have originated as a pattern in woven tweed cloth from Scotland, but are now used in many other woven fabric including silk. The actual term 'houndstooth' for the pattern originated around 1936.
